Adam James Stewart B.A., LL.B.
While Adam's roots are firmly planted in the Niagara Region, he pursued his university studies and launched his legal career in Ottawa and Toronto. Adam received his Honours B.A. in 2006 from the University of Toronto and graduated from the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law in 2009. He summered and articled in Toronto at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP ("Osler"), one of Canada's most respected national law firms on Bay Street. Adam was admitted to the Law Society of Upper Canada in the spring of 2010.
Bringing Big City Experience to Church Street
In the fall of 2010, Adam joined Osler as an associate with a focus on corporate/commercial law and discovered he had an affinity for litigation. Since Adam's earliest memories as a child, Adam knew he wanted to be a lawyer. Achieving the high level of academic achievement that earns young lawyers an offer to join a Bay Street firm like Osler's, was the fulfillment of one of his many benchmark life goals.
Adam received the finest training and mentorship in Toronto and built lasting relationships. However, his practice lacked the personal connection he realized he enjoyed with clients that is not available in Big City firms. In part, it was this desire for a change from "Big Client Impersonal Law" to "Smaller Client Personal Law" as well as being raised by parents that believe in the "work to live but not the live to work" approach to life and family, that encouraged Adam to keep the option open of returning to the Niagara Region to practice. His father and good friend, Mark F. Stewart, that practiced in the Niagara Region for over 30 years (having also left Bay Street and Big Client Impersonal Law for the rewards enjoyed by working closely with clients offered in Niagara).
Marriage and the start of Adam's family made for a very easy decision to leave Toronto. After, meeting his wife Jennifer, a kindergarten teacher at Sterling Hall Boys School in Toronto and also from Niagara-on-the-Lake, with a deep rooted family history of farming in the Niagara Region, Adam and Jennifer set the plan in motion to transition back to their home in the Niagara Region. Shortly after the birth of their first child, a daughter, Emmersyn Grace Stewart, Adam and Jennifer moved back home in 2013.
Adam joined the law firm of Douglas, Stewart & Associates LLP, a venerable law firm in St. Catharines with a depth of experience and expertise in multiple areas of law that strecth back to early legal community of St. Catharines beginning with Bench, Keogh in the early 1900's. Adam had the benefit of Mark's corporate mentorship and the ability to pursue his desire to litigate under the guidance and mentorship of R. David House, counsel to DSA.
Natural synergies developed amongst Mark, David and Adam that led to the creation of their new partnership Stewart, House Law LLP on May 1, 2014. At Stewart, House LLP, Adam's practice focuses on a wide range of law including corporate/commercial, litigation, employment, construction, real estate and wills and estates.
Commitment to Clients and Community
Throughout all his university years, Adam was a landscape construction foreman for a local Niagara Region landscape construction company. While in Toronto, he prided himself on the fact that he was one of a few Bay Street lawyers that could drive heavy machinery or had played a critical role in transforming multi-million dollar homes into award winning properties both in the Niagara Region and elsewhere.
Adam never shied away from wearing his cowboy boots with his suit while practicing in Toronto. The old adage "You can take the boy out of the country but never the country out of the boy" was a reality for Adam and recognized by his clients, colleagues and friends at Osler.
As a country boy at heart, Adam understands the value of a dollar and that every dollar spent must have meaningful value. Working long landscape construction hours and on his family farm, made Adam appreciate the value of hard work and that a strong work ethic without which a high level of academic achievement and excellence means little. Adam brings this work ethic, dedication and broad based experience to his legal practice. Adam believes in supporting small local businesses that are the economic backbone of the Niagara Region through professional, experienced and affordable legal service.
Stewart, House LLP - Bay Street Experience at Small City Prices
As a Partner of Stewart, House Law LLP, Adam is thrilled to be able to offer his clients a wealth of experience and knowledge, as Mark, David and Adam all started their legal careers at top tier Bay Street Firms. However, each chose to leave the "Big Firm" approach to return home to their roots and serve local clients. It is this decision that binds them together so well as partners. They all appreciate the amount of time, dedication and personal sacrifice that went into accomplishing and working for Bay Street Firms but yet they mutually acknowledge their resolve to leave the Big City practice in the pursuit of a balanced life which allows Adam and his partners to be connected to their clients who also share similar life goals.
The Stewart, House Law LLP team is further able to provide clients with quick responses to complex legal questions, at reasonable costs. At SH, Adam stresses the importance of full disclosure to his clients and the ability to speak with Adam at their request. Costs are always a major concern for clients which Adam fully appreciates. Adam is more than willing to work within a client's means to reasonably accommodate his or her legal concerns and NEW CLIENTS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME!
Emails are a necessary means to the practice of law but Adam prefers an "Old School" approach to his practice and will always be available for a phone conversation or a one on one meeting with his clients as he left Toronto to get away from the "faceless" approach to law.
Adam looks forward to meeting you and serving your legal needs on a cost effective and efficient basis.
